Why white UPVC fascias go green and streaky

What causes the green film and black streaks on fascias, soffits and gutters, and how they’re cleaned.

White fascia and guttering above windows on a stone-clad house

White UPVC fascias and soffits look sharp when they’re new. A few years later many are green, grey or streaked with black lines.

The green film

The green is algae. It grows on damp, shaded surfaces and is common on north-facing walls and under trees. UPVC is smooth, but dust and dirt settle on it and give algae something to grow on.

The black streaks

Black streaks running down the front of gutters and fascias are usually dirt carried by rainwater. Water runs over the edge of the gutter, picks up grime and leaves tracks as it dries. Overflowing gutters make it worse. See signs your gutters are blocked.

Why it’s worth cleaning

  • Clean fascias and soffits make the whole house look fresher.
  • Algae left for years is harder to remove.
  • Cleaning gives you a chance to spot damage to the roofline.

How we clean them

We clean fascias, soffits and cladding with purified water. It lifts dirt, algae and streaks and dries without leaving marks. Read more in cleaning with purified water.

Fascia and soffit cleaning is included with every roof clean, and we can clean your windows at the same visit.
