Block paving, concrete, tarmac or resin: cleaning each driveway surface

How the common driveway surfaces differ, and what each needs to stay clean.

Driveways in Essex come in a few common surfaces. Each gets dirty in its own way.

Block paving

The most common surface on newer homes. The blocks are hard wearing, but the joints between them collect moss, weeds and dirt. Pressure washing cleans the blocks and joints, and the joints can then be refilled with kiln-dried sand. See why block paving needs re-sanding.

Concrete

Concrete is tough and handles pressure washing well. It’s porous, so it can hold oil stains and go green in shade. A cleaning treatment can help with stubborn staining.

Tarmac

Tarmac is softer than concrete, especially in hot weather. It needs a gentler approach so the surface isn’t damaged. Moss and weeds tend to grow at the edges and in cracks.

Resin

Resin driveways have a smooth, bound surface. They don’t have joints for weeds to grow in, but dirt and algae can still build up on the surface. They need care with cleaning so the resin isn’t marked.

What they have in common

  • Shade and damp lead to algae and moss.
  • Leaves and soil left on the surface make it worse.
  • Car fluids can stain any of them.
