Moss removal or roof cleaning: which do you need?

The difference between removing moss from a roof and a full roof clean, and how to choose.

We’re often asked whether a roof needs moss removal or a full roof clean. The answer depends on what’s on the roof.

Moss removal

Moss removal deals with the moss itself. We take the moss off with specialist roof scraping equipment, then apply a suitable treatment to help keep the roof clean for longer. Biocide treatment is available to slow regrowth. All the moss we remove is taken away.

Moss removal suits a roof where moss is the main problem and the tiles underneath are otherwise in fair condition.

Roof cleaning

A full roof clean goes further. As well as moss, it removes algae, lichen, dirt and staining to bring back the look of the whole roof. The method depends on the roof: we use low-pressure steam cleaning and soft washing where they suit the tiles, and a biocide treatment can follow.

Gutter, fascia and soffit cleaning is included with every roof clean, because moss and dirt from the roof end up there anyway.

How to choose

  • Mostly moss, and you just want it gone: moss removal.
  • Moss plus green or black staining, lichen spots or general grime: roof cleaning.
  • Not sure: send us a photo and we’ll tell you what the roof needs.

Why not a pressure washer?

High-pressure water can damage roof tiles and force water under them. That’s why we match the method to the roof and use low-pressure options. Read more in what is soft washing.
