When a cleaning company takes away moss, rubbish or other waste from your property, where it ends up matters. That’s what waste carrier registration is about.

What registration means

In England, anyone who transports waste as part of their business must be registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency. The register exists so that waste goes to proper sites and isn’t dumped.

Why it matters to you

GOV.UK guidance on the waste duty of care says businesses must check that anyone who takes their waste away is registered. If you hand waste to an unregistered carrier and it ends up fly-tipped, you could be held responsible.

Householders have a duty of care too. You should check that anyone taking waste from your home is registered.

How to check

The Environment Agency keeps a public register of waste carriers, brokers and dealers on GOV.UK. You can search it by name or registration number.
