Food waste caddies do a useful job, but they hold the smelliest waste in the house in a small space. Without care they can smell, leak and attract flies within days.

Use liners

Line the kitchen caddy and the outside caddy with the type of liner your council accepts. Liners stop food sticking to the plastic and make emptying cleaner. Check your council’s website, as some only accept certain liners or newspaper.

Empty little and often

Move food waste from the kitchen caddy to the outside caddy every day or two, especially in warm weather. Put the outside caddy out for every collection, even if it isn’t full.

Keep the lid locked

Most outside caddies have a locking handle. Use it. It keeps the smell in and makes it harder for foxes to get in. See how to stop foxes getting into your bins.

Wash it after collection

Once the caddy has been emptied, rinse it, give it a wipe with a mild disinfectant and let it dry before putting a new liner in. The rim and lid are where residue builds up.

Keep it out of the sun

A caddy in the shade stays cooler, which slows down rotting and smells.

We clean caddies too

When we clean your wheelie bins we can clean your food caddy at the same visit. See wheelie bin cleaning or ask for a quote.
